In a commissary operation you are constantly walking, standing, and kneeling repeatedly for long periods of time. For this reason, our account has been using anti-fatigue mats on high traffic areas and this has tremendously benefited the health, comfort of our employees and increased productivity.

Working with my DM Melissa Gano in her role as East Region Safety Lead we identified a question we could help answer. What does a District Safety Lead (DSL) do? What are their responsibilities?

Having been in the role myself we decided to host training tutorial calls with all the East Region DSLs and their DMs to show them step by step the tools that are available to them to help be successful in their role and bringing value to their Districts goal of trying to reach Target Zero. I shared my examples of some best practices from my experience as a DSL and the useful things I have learned along the way. The ultimate goal was to have more engaged DSL’s that were equipped to be the safety “go to guy” for their areas.

An unexpected result was that this also created a resource for these DSL’s to reach out to a peer (me) with questions or asking for help with something. Since I’m not a DM or “Corporate Person” I think it created a more relaxed environment for them to reach out and not be worried about looking bad because they didn’t know. I know these trainings have helped engagement with safety in the East region, Shoes for Crews compliance, SAFE Check completion, SAFE investigations being completed on time and beyond.

From Madrid, at Aramark España, we wanted to share the brilliant initiative that the SAFE team led alongside the B&I Operations team during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. This initiative arose from the creation of Aramark’s EVERSAFE platform to ‘ensure the well-being and health of our clients, consumers, and employees through reinforced hygiene and safety protocols.

In this case, Aramark obtained the AENOR certification seal for ‘COVID-19 Protocols.’ AENOR is a recognized entity known for building trust through conformity assessment and training, among other services. The achievement of this seal was made possible thanks to our partner PwC at their facilities located in the PwC Tower on Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, where Aramark provides gastronomy services.

We’ve attached a couple of news articles published on our social media at that time.

Additionally, we received public gratitude from Carmen Ruiz, Director of Purchasing and Facility Management at PwC Spain, following the AENOR certification experience that undoubtedly provides greater security when dealing with future emergency situations.

In Spence Mining site, at the end of 2023 and the beginning of fiscal year 2024, we have a high accident rate. Because of this, we investigated in depth the real causes that led us to these events, one of them being the behavior of our staff.

This is how the pilot of the Behavioral Platform was created with a view to immediate action that additionally allows feedback in the moment, providing an instantaneous training element with the aim of modifying risky behaviors and reinforcing the safe behaviors of our staff in the work areas.

With this we are able to identify risky behaviors and generate action plans to reduce them. Identify trends to devise preventive actions and focus recreational activities to reduce risky activities and strengthen safe behaviors, in order to improve the performance of personnel in safety matters, influencing the reduction of accidents.

I asked maintenance to attach a full drain cover on all kitchen floor drains. The floor drains either were missing covers or just a half drain cover. I wanted to prevent injuries and cartwheels getting caught in the floor drains and loosing food. We used floor signs until floor covers were completely done and drains were covered.
I train my employees on what to look for and what to do if they see water on the floor use floor signs until we get the spill cleaned up report the situation to a manager or supervisor. Damaged equipment tag it and let a manager know so we can let Maintenance know. we also train the kitchen Trustee’s on safety. We want everyone to leave work safe the way they came into work.

Our contract carried out a plan to involve the entire team in prevention matters, understanding that we are all responsible for safety, not just the safety team. For this reason, the focus shifted from protecting health to promoting it. The layout of the service line was rethought to make it safer overall for both our team and our clients. This initiative arose from safety walks conducted jointly with our clients, 5-minute talks, and prevention training.

Mining is one of the work environments with the highest risk of accidents, which is why it is essential that all employees identify and learn to prevent critical risks in their workplace.

Due to this, the “Developing SAFE Environment” Campaign was created, which consists of the creation of risk maps for each area and the publication of signs with the risks present in the work areas throughout the mining site.

With this activity we continue to strengthen the preventive culture, where collaborators were able to easily identify the risks associated with each task and where each area contributed with the identification of these, becoming an enriching experience for all those who actively participated in both the installation of stickers as in learning the objective of the campaign

Informative videos have been designed, thinking about people in the category of older adults and for those who did not have access to a complete education, with dedication and proven experience, with the certainty that we will illuminate and enrich the minds and lives of our collaborators in a simple, educational, entertaining and playful way, but ensuring that all the information and knowledge are sufficient and minimum to carry out the designated operational tasks.

Thanks to this intense work of communicating and worrying about understanding, As well as, the effective execution of our collaborators in their respective activities, we have obtained and quantified tangible fruits and results in safety areas, which we can proudly transmit as Los Bronces Mining site, given that after having initiated these measures in 2023, to date we have a total of 8,570,594 hours without accidents with lost time.

Season/Aramark at the home of Guinness
We are sharing our story with our Aramark wider team showing how we are identifying and prevent accidents/incidents from happening and continually driving our safety culture at the Guinness storehouse.
Scenario:
We identified a major risk in our bars when a staff member was required to lift a full glass rack from the bottom shelf of a glass rack trolley. The rack held 30 pint glasses, that could cause a potential injury when lifting from the lower shelf.
Over the duration of a normal day, glasses accumulate from each bar and restaurant within the areas. If a member of the team were to lift one of these full racks from the lower area of the trolly, the action could place a great strain upon their back causing an incident. Lifting a full rack from the bottom shelf, not following manual handling procedures can compromise one’s posture making it more of a challenge to gain and keep stability for the entirety of the task being carried out.
We evaluated our safety briefs and risk assessments, we were able to identify and gain new insight and knowledge that gave us a sense of direction in how to proceed to make it a safer working environment along with the ability to learn from past mistakes. Seasons collaborated with MFK and Diageo to implement preventable measures:
Corrective action, we purchased half rack glasses for the bottom shelf that can now only house 15 glasses placed within the lower rack, also we welded closed the midpoint of the bottom shelf so only half racks can be stored, prohibiting the use of full glass racks on the bottom shelf. This enabled us to prevent an accidents from happening and abide by our manual handling guidelines and prevent unnecessary risks. This prevents anyone from carrying a load that could potentially cause great harm, in turn having serious consequences.

While initially struggling with a campus-wide pest issue, Perkins made great proactive improvements to our pest control program, some of which span across multiple locations;
•Lowered door sweeps to make them more effective
•Sealed areas that could have been pest entry points
•Replaced screens in Kitchen windows
•Developed an on-going dialogue with out Pest Control team to effectively communicate & resolve issues
•Removed equipment/clutter that was no longer needed & could have harbored pests
•Re-organization of POD storage/cage area
•Cleaned & re-organized Office areas
We have also made improvements to our allergen program, with a manager checking & signing off each time a customer with a food allergy orders a meal at Perkins.
We have also implemented the Epi-Pen program and checked the supply weekly.
Due to some of our temp labor speaking espanol, we have posted Safety Reminders at Denny’s and Flip regarding PPE in both English and Spanish.
Due to Perkins being “Late Night”, during some recent overnight Winter Weather storms we were able to pre-treat and shovel our loading docks during the night-time so that they were cleared by the time the AM shift came in.
Last Fall, when Perkins had multiple power failures – we utilized a “team effort” approach to move thousands of dollars of frozen foods to the Stadium Freezers. Employees passed boxes in an assembly line process in order to minimize the likelihood of injury.

5 years ago when I joined Aramark I noticed that the team was using the 2nd floor to store paper goods. To get to the 2nd floor one had to climb up the wooden stair structure with only one banister while pallets of paper products were beamed up with a forklift. This area was too small for a forklift to operate from and there was a potential risk for it to strike an object or a team member. The 2nd floor had a low ceiling height with metal beams low enough that one had to bend down to get through.

I shut down this space and reconfigured the entire warehouse to house all paper products on the first floor and banned the forklift from operating in that small space near the 2nd floor stairs.

In my role as a cleaning assistant, I always faced a particular challenge: keeping the bathrooms spotless. The greatest risk lay in the shower area, where users often left everything soaked with water. The constant cycle of drying and re-drying was exhausting, and to make matters worse, the cleaning products used often left the floor slippery.

Determined to address this safety and efficiency issue, I proposed an innovative solution: installing ‘wet’ mats. These mats were not only non-slip but also had the ability to absorb moisture, making the cleaning process much easier and faster.

The impact was immediate and significant. Falls became a thing of the past, and bathroom maintenance became much more manageable. Furthermore, the installation of the ‘wet’ mats not only improved safety but also proved to be a proactive measure in maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for all users of the facility.

I was working with my Client to support him with Fire Safety Systems on site. My Client approved SRS Alert Fire Systems Ltd for all Fire Safety on the campus which is one of Aramark’s approved suppliers.

Our Ansul system required its 10 year service.

SRS Fire Systems arranged for an audit to be carried out on site and highlighted that the Ansul System in place need to be upgraded as it was not compliant with current legislation.

Our Client was very happy to proceed with this as the site is a residential setting and fire safety is paramount ,see attached Certification and Work Order Report.

This highlights the importance of the awareness of Fire Safety on sites especially sites that are residential settings/Nursing Homes with vulnerable adults .
We at Aramark “Congregation of the Holy Ghost “ always thrive and support our Client.

After the Sandy hook School Shooting, we realized we needed to make changes to all the kitchen entrance doors of each location in the district. They were solid doors with little side visibility to see who was on the other side of door before opening. I met with the administration and attended the Wellness meetings to discuss improving and securing each location door. We then had all the doors retrofitted with visibly panels in order to see who was outside before opening. Now, staff members have swipe keys programed with schedules for them to enter and all other visitors must go through the security booths at the entrance of the schools. No doors are permitted to be propped open at any time and all screen doors have been removed.

  1. Made sure that the Jail staff purchased slip resistant shoes for incarcerated people who work in the kitchen and that we do not allow workers to come and work if they are not wearing these safety shoes. This rule has resulted in zero slip and fall accidents and demonstrates our commitment to keep our staff safe whether they are Aramark staff or incarcerated people; we are all human and we all matter.
  2. I took the initiative to translate the “Shield” trainings for my Aramark spanish speakers, as these were not available in Spanish at the time. I then sent these documents to my DM so he can share them with other locations. My DM forward the translated Shield trainings to Nicole McVaugh; Nicole made arrangements to get approval and make the Spanish Shield training available to all locations. I felt that it was very important for Spanish speakers to be able to read the trainings and be aware of the important information that is in those trainings.

Here at Tyra, we take ownership, not only of the platform, but to a large extent also of colleagues.
This must be understood in the sense that everyone helps everyone.

We ensure that everyone is comfortable, that everyone is motivated and that everyone has a good time.
We take ownership of what we see.

Understood in the sense that there is no such thing as – it is not my area – if you see something you own it, and if that is not in order, or a full waste bin, you take it with you.

We help each other to succeed and be good at what we do.

We have ongoing joint rounds in all areas to ensure that all workplaces are tidy and safe to work in.
this also applies to our stock, where we clean up weekly, for any misplacements.

Here at COL the old asphalt pavement between the kitchen and dry storage room had lots of holes, broken up areas and was very rough. This would cause standing water and frozen spots to slip and trip on. During a safety check of the facility the issues were noted in the report. IDOC approved the replacement of the old asphalt. Concrete was installed and now it is properly graded for drainage and free of holes. This has saved a potential slip trip and fall incident and created a safe handicap parking area for wheelchair use.

We had an issue with putting boxes to close to the ceiling in the dry storage area. I corrected this by putting small lines on the walls to show how far from the ceiling boxes must be stored. This small intervention has kept us fire safety compliant by keeping boxes far enough from the ceiling by using the lines and not guessing the distance from the ceiling as we did before.

We have floor tiles that have come loose, and the next layer of asbestos tiles are coming up too. This has created a tripping hazard where we serve the juice in the chow hall. A work order request was submitted. I showed the contract monitor the missing tiles in the chow hall and it was reported in the quarterly audit. IDOC has approved the work order. Next month all the tiles in the chow hall are being removed and concrete sealer will be applied giving us a new floor and removing the tripping and asbestos hazard.

We had a inmate that was clearing a pallet of goods. I observed him bending at the waist and reaching over another pallet to load a cart. As the instructor of the in2work program I found this a perfect teaching opportunity for both Aramark staff and the inmates. I stopped production and had the everyone gather so we could teach proper lifting techniques. We demonstrated bending our knees, moving obstacles out of the way, and even team lift techniques. We also discussed stretching and prevented messures to insure saftey. This was a great team builder for the entire kitchen and a great way to prevent injuries.

In the underground mine casinos, the workers responsible for desconche faced a recurring problem: their safety shoes would get wet despite using shoe covers. I decided to intervene and proposed a crucial change: replacing the shoe covers with PVC boots.

Initially, there was some resistance to the change, but once the new boots were implemented, the impact was evident. Safety shoes were no longer getting wet, and workers could perform their tasks with greater comfort and safety. This simple measure not only solved an everyday problem but also proved to be a resounding success in improving working conditions in the underground environment.

When I arrived on site in August, I noticed they did not have any type of recognition or reward system for practicing “SAFE” actions. I initiated a “Safety Star” program where leadership hands out a “Safety Star Card” when they “catch” them being safe. When they hand them out, they make a really big deal and gets the employees excited about being “caught” practicing SAFE. Employees then turn them into various boxes around the resort. We started in December, as of March 31, we have handed out 73 cards and pull two winners each month (one from the hotels, and one from the park) we issue them “Rewards Cards” that are good at 9 locations resort-wide and recognize them quarterly with a “Star Lunch” where we also recognize our Shining Stars of the Month (Employee of the month). This promotes a SAFE culture and creates excitement around being SAFE!

The safety practice that has contributed to our safety success in the Ripon Area School District is that if a fellow team member asks for help, you are not allowed to say no. If you are unable to help, you should then help ask or seek help in another form for the employee requesting help and ensure that they don’t try whatever task they are asking help for on their own. This is especially important when it comes to lifting things up off the floor or putting our food orders away. I’ve noticed this small safety practice has not only helped our team prevent injuries, but has also set each of our kitchens up for awesome teamwork!

Recently we successfully retained the commissary account in Clark County. One of the biggest changes in the new contract was becoming an off-site warehouse. Meaning we had to move all equipment from one location to the other. This included shelving and a pick and pack line. We have an amazing team and we managed to move all equipment in the course of three days thankfully with no injuries. In doing this it opened my eyes to a different perspective of see something say something. On one of the days I noticed Carlos Novoa struggling to move one of the pallets off the truck and I went over to him and started helping him. I then pulled him to the side and let him know it was okay to ask for help. From then on I realized that the best way to keep my staff safe was to become approachable on duties that require manual labor. Also to be as verbal as possible about safety. I knew all staff would catch on without them knowing and making it seem like it was a task. Now it makes me very proud to hear staff say things like: ” Hey someone can trip on that”, “This edge is sharp”, “Can you help me”, “that’s stored to high or that’s unstable”, etc. Showing the level in which you care will naturally have them care about those around them as well.

At Kinross mining site we train our collaborators using videos, because it has facilitated the understanding of safety and risk prevention measures by workers so that they can apply what they have learned about safety more effectively and helps them recognize possible dangers to which they may be exposed in their work environment.

With the broadcasting of the videos, we have contributed to greater understanding and identification of risks, reducing the accident rate to zero in FY 2023 and FY 2024 to date.

Catholic Charities doesn’t have specific scenarios, rather an overarching goal of being accident free.
The management team sits down with all of our techs each week, as a group, to discuss upcoming work orders and solutions. This gives our team a great opportunity to listen and critique strategies we are using to complete tasks. We spend time each week reviewing the safety topic as well as what is working vs what isn’t. Our team feels confident in requesting additional PPE and stressing safety concerns that need additional attention.
This method gives our management team the ability to guide the employees into a better way to problem solve vs what the employee thought would originally work.
Open communication without reprimand is what makes our account so successful in being accident free.

During the 2022-2023 school year we had several safety incidents occur. In an effort to increase our safety efforts and safety culture, this school 2023-2024 school year, we implemented a once a week Teams Safety Call with our leads. Each week a different site lead reviews the current brief with their peers and shares best practices. If a safety incident did occur, the lead of that school reports on what happened, how it happened and the steps that are being taken to reduce the risk of the incident occurring again. We have, in addition, recently added to our weekly calls spot videos to reinforce our safety topics. We have seen a remarkable reduction in safety incidents this year. Empowering our leads with the knowledge and support they need has enabled them to promote a successful safe culture at their schools.

At the beginning of FY2022, in the analysis of 2 memorable accidents, separated by less than 15 days, the search began for effective corrective measures that would have an impact and involvement of the FLM (Front Line Manager) in front of the operational personnel, with a methodology and pedagogical strategies that invite you to learn and practice the correct exercise of the tasks to be carried out contemplated in the Risk school.

The Aramark Risk School is framed in the reality of the company’s areas, seeking to contextualize the work experience and guide it with a focus on the critical dangers to control in each area. It is also planned for group learning and has different positive aspects for people, including improvement in communication, increased creativity, acquiring responsibilities, generating trust, respect and, most of all, mutual collaboration.

Thanks to the Risk School, the accident rate was reduced and controlled, remaining at “zero” throughout FY2023 until today.

Here’s a best practice sharing from the Zigong City First People’s Hospital project:

Project Name: Zigong City First People’s Hospital
Brief Description of the Case: The Zigong City First People’s Hospital learned from an incident where a child at the Chongqing Children’s Yuzhong Hospital accidentally ingested cleaning chemicals from a work cart. To prevent similar incidents, especially in areas with many child patients such as the pediatric building and outpatient hall, the project implemented a safety measure. They used a specialized toolbox to securely store the cleaning chemicals on the cart, effectively preventing chemical injuries.

Leigh Maida would like to recognize Chrissy Flanigan for a very recent experience in which she and her entire team pulled off the impossible and did not loose sight of safety while doing it. An FLA strike is underway at the Wells Fargo Center and while we all hope it is resolved quickly, the effort that Chrissy and her team are making to keep business up and running at normal levels was amazing. I think it is a testament to her as a leader that she has been able to corral so much support from accounts far and wide to make sure that we are able to provide the guest experience everyone expects of us — without any compromises on Safety — despite the extraordinary circumstances. Every chef, manager and visiting support person had food safety in the front of their minds; There is a real group effort underway to make sure our temporary FLAs get the quick training and tools they needed to keep our food safe for fans.

There is one thing I try to always tell the team and that is: “If you see it, Say it.”

This starts in the office with the management team, if you see someone doing something that could potentially get them hurt than say it right away and stop the employee in their tracks.

It’s also moves down to the staff when working together. So I will often see if a staff member isn’t wearing their PPE , like a cut glove another staff member will say “hey put the glove on before someone sees you not wearing it.”

Something that we have implemented is having oven mitts hanging beside all of the hot equipment, like warmer, rotisserie oven, and pizza oven. This was to promote them to use the gloves for anything that may be hot, it takes away the need to wonder around to look for safety equipment, and if it’s not found they’re not using something like paper towel to grab the hot item.

Its helping them make sure they can make safe decisions.

After an unsatisfactory third-party inspection, there were multiple corrections needed. One violation was for an unclean slicer. While it was clear attempts had been made to clean the slicer, it had food debris underneath and was not ready to be operated. We decided to purchase a protective cover (well spent dollars) for the slicer. The staff was trained to cover the slicer only after it was ready to be safely used. Training included proper PPE and having an uncluttered workspace. Covering the slicer also ensured that no debris would accumulate on the machine during down times.

In addition to doing our weekly safe brief with the employees, we also do the safe briefs with the inmates. One problem that can occur with safe briefs, is it becomes too repetitive with seasoned employees. I’ve also learned that once you know a topic pretty well, a good way to learn more about a topic is to teach it. So I like to engage the employees (especially the seasoned ones) by having them engage the inmates with our safe briefs.

Since re-opening in early 2022. The entire Aramark service team at SCC has refocused our level of commitment to our client, their participants, and to each other. The management team has turned over, but most front line employees have worked here for years. A focus on safety improvements has helped build rapport and trust with this team. New Safety Signage, an abundance of accessible PPE, new eye wash stations, new and updated first aid stations, new safety mirrors for dangerous corridors, and updated procedures and communication have helped make our commitment to safety obvious when moving thru the property. We expect the team to work smart and work safe and its our responsibility to provide the tools and training needed to ensure this happens effortlessly.

‘Safety in Hands’ campaign is currently underway. It involves conducting a presentation on the topic, followed by a playful activity. In this activity, the participants are divided into groups, and each group answers a multiple-choice exam with five questions (one for each finger) within a specified short time. Afterward, the results of each group’s exam are analyzed. A wrong answer corresponds to a finger injury, and the ‘winning group’ is the one with the fewest injured fingers. The concept conveyed is that lack of awareness, haste, distraction, etc., can lead to hand injuries. It’s worth noting that the winning group receives recognition in the form of gifts—both from Aramark (mugs) and our client (Barrick Gold), who contributes their acknowledgment (caps, thermoses).

The campaign aims to assess the knowledge acquired and identify any training or reinforcement needs across various safety topics. Additionally, it recognizes employees for their safety knowledge.”

When presenting the Q1 CBR to the client we shared our safety moment “Parking Lot Safety”. This led to conversation that they were fencing in the employee parking lot. Chief Restivo asked where our staff park and we told him that we park across the street from the facility and then brought to his attention that there is not a cross walk to safely cross four lanes of traffic. The following day the Chief shared with me that he submitted a request to the Chief of Traffic Engineering to add a cross walk in front of the jail. They have agreed to add this to their projects to complete. Sharing our safety moment will impact the safety of all the JSO staff.

1) World Health and Safety Contest 2023 winner submission. Safety isn’t just in the workplace. We talked about this in our huddles and how safety tips that are shared at work also apply to your day to day activities at home as well.

2) To improve huddle engagement we add a safety ball occasionally which has a list of safety topics on it. The ball is tossed to a person in the huddle and the topic showing is reported out on. This created some fun and more vivid group discussions in our huddle safety efforts.

As we commemorate World Health and Safety Day 2024, the Monroe County Jail in Key West, Florida, has a compelling story to share, perfectly encapsulating this year’s theme: “Shine on for Safety.”

It’s been over four years since our last injury incident, a harrowing accident involving a trailer door that resulted in multiple fractures for one of our team members. Just hours after the first incident, another team member suffered a hand fracture due to the Commissary Go-Cart, caught between the tight doors of the jail, highlighting the persistent risks of our operational environment.

Since then, we’ve undergone a significant safety transformation.

A pivotal change came with the introduction of TAC Gloves, reinforced gloves commonly used by law enforcement to protect hands.

Our facility’s tight corners and narrow entry points are breeding grounds for struck-by and caught-between injuries. However, our enhanced safety measures and protective gear, including TAC Gloves, have ensured an injury and incident-free record for over four years.

Safety isn’t just a priority; it’s ingrained in our daily routines and interactions at Monroe County.

During Hurricane Ian’s onslaught in 2022, the Monroe County Jail faced a daunting task. As Key West flooded, our team didn’t hesitate. Donning our TAC Gloves and enhanced PPE, we braved the storm to assist our community.

Amid the chaos, we didn’t miss a beat. Despite the raging winds and rising waters, we ensured that our unit continued its operations seamlessly. Not a meal was missed, not a Commissary delivery day skipped.

Our commitment to safety never wavered. With every step, we prioritized the well-being of our team and the community we serve.

As we observe World Health and Safety Day, let’s raise a toast to David Watson and Team Monroe for their resilience and unwavering dedication to safety. Here’s to many more years of thriving in a secure environment, where the well-being of every team member is paramount.

Dea Goad

Dea Goad

FSD Dea Goad has been the FSD at the most remote facility in all of the Indiana Department of Corrections for many years. The struggle with this remote operation is and will always be staffing, the closest city is 30 miles away. While running a short-staffed operation, Ms. Goad maintains the cleanest and safest kitchen in all of my group. When all new staff start work, she makes sure that they complete all of their safety training, that they are wearing their Shoes for Crews, and she completes their equipment training personally. Just doing the little things and showing her staff how much, she cares about safety has led to an operation that has not had a serious injury in several years.

Just this past week we had an emergency situation which occurred in our retail operation. Our production manager, Deb took immediate action. A special needs student had a seizure in our retail operation and Deb was able to immediately get support from teachers, nurse, so that 911 could be called. She assisted with timing of the seizure so that thorough info could be given to the paramedics when they arrived. Despite the intensity of this, Deb was the only person working in the Dog Haus (retail operation) and had to think and react fast. She calmly closed the gate to the entrance of the Dog Haus when the paramedics arrived and asked all students with purchases in hand to go over to the cafe to pay. She alerted the team in the cafe that there was a medical emergency which is why she directed students to their location. She knew not to touch the student but was able to confirm he did not hit his head and was provided with as much privacy as possible. Truly our hero of the day! Being able to react quickly and calmly to an emergency and take action turned an emergency situation into a positive outcome.

Developed a document for Traceability assisting in the managing of the Food Safety Management System (FSMS)-
We perform a weekly check on one product/core ingredient from the delivery stage to serving stage on site here at the hospital.
This is our management validation step, this effectively is “checking the checker”. We record into this document snippets form all the digital records pertaining to that product/recipe, ie delivery/cooking/hot holding- from times, temperature’s, user names, management verified and corrective action. We also track the allergens and the confirm ingredients as a whole of the recipe in question. This document is sent to head chef, general manager and safety specialist with nots or findings for improved measures. This is then filed away for future reference checks. We also use this document for communication to the EHO, external auditors or clients of the robust nature of you system and on occasions can follow back a potential food safety claim

Outcome:
External auditors & EHOs have all commented on the presentation and easy of understanding the information as excellent. We have a high rate on record keeping & up to date records due to this added check. it also offers an excellent way of feedback both personally and it tests the system

In the dish room in this building we noticed that some large containers were being stored on the top shelf. The posed a safety risk from employees struggling to reach the items, as well as the items could fall on someone. The leadership in this building worked together to find a new storage location for these large containers that is lower on the shelf and easier to reach.

This is a unique profit center in our portfolio. While the Walmart Museum and Cafe are under renovation, we are operating a food truck on the Bentonville Town Square. This is a highly trafficked area and centerpiece of the community. The truck has to be moved at the end of each day to another building in town to empty water tanks, restock and refuel. This poses a massive safety risk in moving a large vehicle through a busy area every day.

We recognized this risk and asked our client to schedule Driver Training for our team with some of their senior transportation driver trainers. These trainers had 2 million safe miles driven and were extremely knowledgeable in safe driving. These trainers taught the team how to do pre and post trip inspections, and how to safely operate the vehicle. They set up an obstacle course in an empty parking lot for the team to practice driving in and put them through scenarios that they were likely to encounter.

This training was extremely helpful and has helped our team to safely move the Food Truck through town every day.

We added a transition piece to the floor in one of our most highly trafficked areas in the kitchen. There was a small difference in height of the flooring in these two areas on the kitchen, which we recognized as a trip hazard and also made it difficult to push carts through. Our safety lead pointed out that employees were having to lift the cart to get through this area.

We put in a work order, and our client facilities team came out that day to install a transition piece. Since then, carts go through that area with no problem and is no longer a trip hazard.

Some time ago, at Campamento Zona Norte, we faced a safety challenge that resulted in a memorable anecdote and benefits for everyone. It all began when we implemented a preventive management tool called the ‘green card,’ initially in paper or laminated format. While this measure didn’t immediately create a significant impact, one day while walking through the city, I came across corporate posters from the bank that caught my attention.

Inspired by the idea, we decided to bring the initiative to our camp. We set out to create ‘corporios’ (corporate figures) of preventive tools, including the ‘green card.’ During work shifts, we introduced a small item called the ‘tarjetin,’ designed to encourage the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and promote good work practices. We even requested that the ‘tarjetin’ wear chef’s clothing.

What seemed like an improvised idea turned out to be a clever solution. With the badge at stake, workers felt motivated to follow safety guidelines more rigorously. The mere presence of this ‘corpóreo’ had a significant impact on safety behavior in the project.

Over time, we noticed a considerable improvement in safety indices. Incidents decreased, and awareness of proper PPE use and safe work practices strengthened. This little anecdote demonstrated that sometimes the simplest solutions can yield the greatest safety benefits.

In 2022, our team decided to highlight our employees who utilize Stop Work Authority. We use one-pagers across the portfolio for upset conditions, so we made a one-pager for our “Stop Work Stories.” Attached are the 33 stories we have shared so far to highlight our awesome employees.

(not included in pics): Name of Employee – Sheila L. Smith (2nd Shift Custodian) Date – 8/23/2022 Area of Work – Body Shop Task Being Performed – Cell Cleaning – (MPS LOTO) Reason or Concern for Stopping – EE was uncertain about next steps in the event of a station fault or cell blockage
Description – Background – When performing the MPS lockout the first step is to press the “Cycle Hold” button to put the cell in a stop mode where all mechanical movement is stopped, allowing entry into a cell for cleaning or maintenance. When this is pressed the button will blink, indicating that the cell is completing the current cycle prior to going into the stop mode. The issue is sometimes the button will continue to blink after this has occurred. This often due to either a cell “fault” in the system or a blockage in the cell. This is often rectified by waiting for 1-3 minutes, observing the cell to ensure all movement has stopped & pulling the gate key. After the gate key is pulled, the button stops blinking & goes to a solid light, indicating it is safe to enter. If the button blinks after the gate key is pulled, then the cell is to be reported immediately and no entry is to be made. The issue for the employee is that while the steps on what to do if the light continues to flash was verbally communicated, the information was not in any of the documentation that the employees are to reference when performing these lockouts. Their concern was if by chance they were thought to have done something wrong while performing these secondary steps, then they would have no way to prove they were following an approved procedure. To correct this the information has been added to the Quick Teach Guide the employee use when performing the MPS LOTO.

I joined Aramark at King’s University College in July 2023 as the Executive chef. At that time there was no staff working as there were no students on sight. I was not familiar with any Aramark Health & Safety training initiatives, and I assumed that they wouldn’t amount to much. I was wrong.

In September when the students returned so did the staff. We are lucky to have a strong core group of employees here with 10, 20, and 30 years of service with Aramark. When we began the new school year, we started having our daily huddles at 9am and reviewing the Weekly Safe Brief (at King’s we take 4 days to cover the Weekly Brief). Our 9am meetings allowed for the greatest number of people to join without disrupting staff prep time. When we first started it was like what I imagine a lot of unit’s experience, information flowing in one direction. I spoke and the staff listened. As we all began to feel more comfortable together the staff start opening and sharing their stories and their experiences, we even had Evan Messersmith, Aramark District Manager share a story one morning. Those stories led to conversations, and those conversations led to everyone really looking closely at our unit and how we worked within our unit.

We have experienced lots of insights since September such as:

  • Most staff thought that a fire blanket was for them to wrap themselves with in case of a fire. This was an interesting point that was easily corrected by watching a video online showing how to properly use a fire blanket. What also came from talking about fire blankets was that our fire blanket, as far as the staff could remember, had never been replaced. Which meant that it could have been on the wall for 30 years. This was another interesting point that was easily fixed by purchasing a new one.
  • We identified a risk with our fire evacuation route, and with help from King’s Physical Plant Manager, we will look to have our fire evacuation route changed for next September to minimize the risk of staff being injured if there is a real fire on site.
  • Allergen training was very insight full. Some staff shared, for the first time, their own allergic rection stories. It was surprising to see how many people had never shared such personal information with their colleagues. This led to a discussion about how not knowing that someone is allergic can cause big problems.
  • The one point we always return, because it is one of the biggest points made in the Weekly Safe Brief, is temperatures. We are always talking about delivery temperature, fridge and freezer temperatures, cold holding temperatures, hot holding temperatures, cooking, cooling, reheating temperatures, danger zone temperatures, maximum fridge temperatures, minimum hot holding temperatures. We talk temperatures all the time. And what is interesting, no matter how much we walk temperatures the staff still forget.
  • The Weekly Safe Brief sheets allow me and the staff to have meaningful conversations. When questions start being asked, and answers start coming forward, you quickly see where more information is required to clarify peoples understanding.
  • Sometimes, when we only see the day-to-day goings on in our units, we can forget that things really are improving through simple things like taking 5 – 10 minutes a day to discuss in more details the points within the Weekly Safe Brief. Our morning meetings seem to always begin and end the same way: the staff slowly and begrudgingly make their way (in their own time) to our huddle location; a few staff like to start talking and things take a minute to settle down. When their ready I start reading from the script, and as I do I start asking questions along the way, somethings to specific people and sometimes in general. This is when the meeting starts to take shape, the staff start to engage, and information and ideas start being shared. Before you know it 10 minutes have pasted, and the group are all talking and discussing why it’s important (or not) to use Celsius or Fahrenheit on their record sheets. For my part I wish it was all Celsius.
  • Our safety success story at King’s is our daily commitment to show up at 9am each day. The Weekly Safe Brief, for us, is more than just reading from a script, it is a dedicated time each day for us to come together, learn from each other’s experiences, see our day-to-day role in a slightly different way, and most importantly, to have a few laughs. The staff here at King’s are without a doubt, fully invested in all areas of health and safety in their workplace. You can never go over the same health and safety points too many times.

We were awarded the first Safety Cup delivered to a contracting company in the Ventanas Division. The criteria for winning was…
It was mid-October 2023, when Codelco’s Prevention department historically announced the Safety Cup, which would reward the management of a contracting company for the first time. Posters were filled throughout the Division, videos were uploaded to social networks, colleagues from the Prevention area commented on it and each one made known the reasons why they could be the recipient of the cup.
This is how the bases are born, detailing point by point what would be the key management to determine a winning company, since, of the total of 50 companies, only 1 would win such a precious award. And this is how the 8 parameters are born, which the occupational health and safety management of Ventana Division will review in detail.
1. Do not count accidents with and without lost time during the last 12 months.
2. Do not have operational incidents in the last twelve months.
3. Submit and comply with 100% of the monthly activity program (PAM).
4. Have 100% management of closing Green Cards and gaps raised through the Bow-Tie methodology.
5. Not having critical findings in SSO audit processes, inspections and labor audits.
6. Have 100% participation in meetings of the Joint Slaughter Hygiene and Safety Committee.
7. Not have overexposure in biological tolerance tests during the last 6 months.
8. Prepare monthly hygiene report through the link.

We won!

These stories exemplify our collective commitment to ensuring the health and safety of all individuals within our organization. As we celebrate World Health and Safety Day, we continue to champion safety excellence and strive for continuous improvement in all aspects of our work.

1. At Aramark UHG, safety is our top priority, especially when it comes to vehicle operations. All vehicles under our purview are required to adhere strictly to RSA (Road Safety Authority) regulations to guarantee the safety of both our employees and employers.

To uphold this commitment, we have implemented rigorous procedures, starting with regular vehicle walk-around checks. These checks are conducted meticulously to ensure that our trucks are in optimal, roadworthy conditions before they hit the road.

Moreover, a significant number of our drivers possess the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC), demonstrating their proficiency and compliance with all safety regulations. Our drivers undergo comprehensive training to not only operate vehicles safely but also to identify any potential defects. This training equips them with the necessary skills to flag problems and address them proactively before commencing their journeys.

We emphasize to our drivers the critical importance of ensuring that the vehicles they operate are in roadworthy condition prior to setting off. By maintaining a strict adherence to safety protocols and regulations, we strive to minimize risks and uphold the highest standards of safety across all our operations.

2. Cleaning in a bustling environment poses significant challenges, particularly within the sensitive setting of a hospital where the well-being of vulnerable individuals is of utmost importance. The constant flow of people through hospital corridors during peak hours markedly heightens the risk of falls and trips, especially when cleaning machine cables are strewn along the pathways, exacerbated by inconveniently located sockets.

To address this pressing safety concern, we took proactive measures by engaging the maintenance department. Our collaborative effort resulted in the installation of additional sockets and the implementation of floor cable cover mats. These strategic interventions have notably diminished the risk of accidents, ensuring a safer environment for both patients and staff.

3. Maintaining clear and unobstructed escape routes is crucial for the safety of all individuals within our premises. At Aramark UHG, we prioritize the safety of our staff and customers by ensuring that our escape routes meet stringent safety standards.

Escape routes should ideally be at least one meter wide and in good condition, leading occupants to a place of safety, typically outside and away from the building. Furthermore, it’s imperative that doors along escape routes remain readily accessible at all times, without the need for a key.

In line with our commitment to safety, we have taken proactive steps to address any potential hazards within our escape routes. We recently reached out to our maintenance department to address the issue of an old and worn double door. We have requested the replacement of this door with a new one equipped with a self-closing mechanism. This upgrade is aimed at enhancing the safety of both our staff and customers, ensuring swift and secure evacuation in case of an emergency.

By investing in these safety measures, we reinforce our dedication to providing a secure environment for everyone at Aramark UHG.

While doing Facilities Condition Assessments (FCA) for Aramark Engineering Solutions, (ES) I have led a team of facility engineers and architects on many, many FCAs over the years. These FCAs invariably include surveying equipment/assets located on roofs. After starting and leading the ES safety program for 7 years, ES now has been injury free for approaching 10 YEARS in the next few months. Needless to say safety of the team is important to me. I realized a while back that roof safety is not something Aramark has promoted very often. One day while working on a flat roof with my team, I came to the realization that one point is always left out of the roof safety info that is shared. That one point is: don’t walk backwards on a roof. This is too dangerous and should be emphasized as such. The day I came to the realization that walking backwards on roof (to get a better view, better perspective or because something was in the way) is very, very dangerous, I saved someone’s life. The person I saved was me. I now make it point now to never walk backwards on a roof and make sure my team knows this unstated rule as well.

JHSC member Jan Santos noticed an area of Tim Horton’s where there was a blind spot at the accessibility ramp and adjacent hallway where there have been collision near misses of delivery carts and patrons on the ramp. Jan recommended the installation of a convex mirror to improve visibility in this area, and his efforts resulted in significantly less impacts and near misses on the ramp, and have made the area more accessibility friendly.

Going Home one afternoon a pickup and trailer turned in front of me. I noticed that his back gate on his trailer was open, and a calf was standing at the opening. I turned on my flashers and tried to get around this vehicle keeping my distance from the back of it. The calf finally walked away from the opening, but a Heffer came to the opening and walked right out the back of the trailer and rolled end of end a few times. I had to completely stop in the middle of the highway to avoid hitting the cow. I was finally able to catch and pass this individual and got him to pull over so that no more cows or people were injured. Had I not been paying attention to my surroundings this could have ended very badly.

One of my proudest Safety Champion accomplishments during my career occurred in March 2023 while I was the Suites Operations Manager at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD. After an unfortunate, preventable incident occurred, I collaborated with my awesome District Safety Manager, Anthony Stevenson, and we identified the urgent need for Hot Box Safety, as it is a huge training and coaching opportunity in several accounts, especially in Sports & Entertainment and Premium Catering. Hot Boxes are a staple piece of equipment used to transfer large amounts of food throughout a venue, location, etc. Anthony and I finalized a phenomenal one-sheeter that was circulated throughout our district and is still currently used today.

Upon entering Gulfside’s facility the manager was facilitating a thorough in-service covering all of the safety topics that were discussed in my weekly call with the managers. Diego Rivera covered all of the topics and included personal stories of why these safety topics are important. The team members were engaged in the conversation. I completed a tour with the manager in which we saw immediate implementation of some of the topics discussed. Wet floor signs were utilized correctly, no chemical bottles were found not labeled on the carts and the chemicals were filled and being used correctly. I was extremely pleased with the manager’s encouragement of the safety topics that were discussed from my call. I am thankful for the SAFE mindsets that Diego and his team have. I thanked Diego and appreciated him for his leadership and commitment to safety.

In our District, we have our kitchen staff leave their non-slip shoes at their location to prevent them having stuff on the bottom of their shoes from their homes (as we have staff that live on farms). Another reason we have them do this is as in the winter, the shoes become ice skates when snow gets packed in the grooves and especially on ice, so the shoes lose their grip. By having them keep their shoes at their location prevents random stuff coming in on their shoes and prevents slip and falls on the ice and snow.

At Houston Methodist Hospital, we manage one of the only valet parking operations in the Aramark Enterprise. There are 9 buildings on campus with 6 active valet parking locations. We have a staff of 110 Aramark drivers (4 Managers) working at the account. In 2023, our team parked 350,950 cars. From 2022 to 2023, we were able to reduce our accident/incident claims by 42%, simply by implementing new safety procedures, i.e., garage audits, driver audits, and a new enhanced driver training program. As part of our new driver training program, we added garage schematic diagrams for each garage. The diagrams pinpoint areas of the garages where the majority of accident/incidents occur. Our managers and drivers use these tools to provide a safe and happy work environment. We are committed to continuing to build a culture of safety for our client at Houston Methodist Hospital.

One of our employee Brittany ended up having a seizure while at work. Through some earlier communication and quick training our team was aware and ready with what to do. The whole team was able to identify what was happening and then they kicked into gear. They put Brittany in a comfortable position, held her properly and called the proper kitchen and campus leaders. They were there supporting her through the whole incident. Brittany came back to work and thanked everyone, she was happy we had gone over her condition, and everyone stayed calm during the seizure. Her words were ” I can’t thank everyone enough for keeping me safe and staying calm.” It was a scary situation, but I am so happy with how safe, and professionally my team handled it.

On 1/3/2023 we had a food truck explode while setting up for service at Newport News Shipyard which is part of the business that we manage. For 2 weeks we were unable to use propane for our food truck operations.
Our team on the ground with the help of our Safety department enacted new safety measures, daily check lists, verified documents and inspections for all vendors, as well as an increased focus on safety in our existing food safety inspections.
Within 2 weeks of the return of propane, i found 3 propane leaks that would have been missed had our program not been in effect. I had to completely shut down the food truck operations when the leaks were found and then direct them out for repairs and certify that the repairs had been made prior to being allowed to resume operations.
The food truck program at Newport News Shipyard is a Breakfast, Lunch, and dinner operation with up to 26 different food truck operations serving at up to 44 locations/ service points during the day and week and operates 7 days a week to feed a population of 25,000 ppl. The direct work that i was involved in made the food service at this customer a safer place for all as well as enabled the customer to continue to allow fresh made food to be sold on site. The new safety programs are saving lives daily through the safeguards that we created.

We realized that security was not only physical, but also had a large emotional component. For this reason, we began to carry out different events to strengthen the ties of the team so that they could get to know each other beyond the workplace. Additionally, within the Aramark Facility’s personalized virtual chat program, we introduced a prize called a “mystery box,” which contains various souvenirs of personal use. This prize allows the winning worker to choose a gift for themselves or share it with a colleague, or even accumulate it to donate to someone who needs it. This activity highlights the emotions of empathy, understanding and support, once again contributing to collective self-care.
To date, we have achieved 395 accident-free days, a testament to everyone’s commitment to safety and well-being at Aramark.

Joseph Cummings help saved an employee’s life by having his 2-way radio and using his military training knowledge at the time of a slip and fall incident. Joseph heard on the radio “Code 1, Man down in the men’s locker room”. A guy had fallen and bumped his head. The guy had fell hard enough to where there was blood on the wall, and blood coming out of his nose and face. Joseph immediately ran to the employee and tended to him – checking vitals, wiping the blood, and making sure he was not chocking while others called emergency and got first aid supplies. It turned out the employee had a really severe seizure. Thanks to Joseph and everyone else who assisted in this incident, the employee was able to get the help he needed quicker. The lesson we learned from this situation was how vital communication is in an emergency situation. Radios play a vital part in being safe.

Rapid response, emergency rescue

Hemodialysis machines, burst water pipes, flooded ground, and emergency rescue by cleaning staff, these words put together seem to depict an urgent and busy scene. In the early morning of March 3, 2024, the night shift staff of the project cleaning department of Zigong First People’s Hospital found that the hemodialysis room, which was closed on Sunday, had a burst water pipe of the hemodialysis machine and the ground was flooded, posing a huge safety hazard. The night shift staff promptly informed the center dispatch to coordinate other on-duty personnel and the engineering department to arrive quickly for emergency rescue.

The cleaning staff showed extremely high professionalism and sense of responsibility in the emergency caused by the burst water pipe of the hemodialysis machine. They responded quickly and carried out emergency rescue operations. They not only controlled the spread of flooding in a timely manner, but also effectively treated water traces to avoid further damage to the environment and equipment. Their efforts not only saved potential property losses, but also made important contributions to ensuring the normal operation of the hospital and the treatment environment for patients. This spirit of calmness and rapid response in times of crisis deserves our deep admiration and gratitude.

Race against time, work hard without caring about your own safety

When a fire comes, retreat and avoidance are human instincts, but in Aramark there is such a group of people who race against time without hesitation. They stand up at critical moments, rush to the front at dangerous and urgent moments, and perform a “textbook-style” firefighting emergency rescue. At 10:30-35 am on July 29, 2022, a fire broke out in a roadside restaurant in Zigong First People’s Hospital. In the hot weather, the fire spread rapidly. Hu Bin, manager of the engineering department, summoned department employees Zhong Deming, Wang Qiang, Li Haizhou, and Qiu Yufang to participate in the action, while picking up the first water gun and rushing to the front. The fire spread and the situation was critical. At this moment, Aramark employees and hospital security personnel raced against time and rushed to control the fire before the arrival of firefighters to prevent the fire from spreading. Ensure the safety of personnel and minimize property safety losses. This “textbook-style” firefighting emergency rescue is closely related to Aramark’s emphasis on safety, EHS training and fire emergency plan training. Aramark has always insisted on organizing fire drills for its employees so that they can remain calm in the face of fire, stabilize the situation and quickly extinguish the fire.

The collection and delivery vehicles in the cloth supply room of Zigong First People’s Hospital are all handcarts. The hospital environment is in a hilly area in Sichuan, and the collection and delivery route has many steep slopes. It is very difficult to push the cart up and down the slope after the cloth cart is full. There are great safety risks; the project constantly communicates with the Logistics Support Department and emphasizes the existing safety risks. In 2018, the Engineering Department assisted the Logistics Department and paid to install manual brakes on all pickup and delivery vehicles to facilitate employees to brake the vehicles up and down slopes, reducing the risk of accidents. Security Risk.

During my 7 years at the Campamento Zona Norte project, a recurring and exhausting task was climbing up and down stairs. It wasn’t just the fatigue that concerned us, but also the constant risk of falling, especially on those iron stairs that seemed to turn into skating rinks when the cold and rain were present.

Aware of this issue, the Occupational Health team decided to take action. We gathered and launched a campaign called ‘NO TE RESBALES, PISA FIRME’ (Don’t Slip, Step Firmly). The idea was simple yet effective: install non-slip tapes on all project stairs.

The transformation was remarkable. The tapes not only provided a solid grip even in the coldest conditions but also conveyed a clear message to everyone: our safety was a priority. Since then, falls decreased significantly, and the stairs were no longer a constant source of concern and fatigue. The campaign not only improved our safety but also strengthened the sense of community and mutual care within the project.

We installed a micro market 4/19 in less than an ideal situation.

The employees were having to be near us due to the restrooms and an additional break area.
I identified this immediately and called the facilities director and requested safety cones.

This is the 1st time we have encountered an install that we had employees in the vicinity as this, so this was alarming.

Take aways:

  1. We did not have our own safety cones. We will be purchasing them immediately and they will
be utilized on all installs going forward.
    1. Purchase through Amazon: BATTIFE 12Pack Traffic Safety Cones 28 inches with Reflective
Collars, PVC Orange Construction Cone for Traffic Control, Driveway Road, Parking,
      Industrial & Scientific
  2. The entire team must be on high alert to be continually relocating the cones as the areas
    transition throughout the install process.
  3. Always look for opportunities to block off walking areas from employees in the vicinity. Create
a path, if possible, as far away from the work area as possible.
DO NOTE hesitate to do redirect the company’s employees where you are working and always
speak safety if any situations arise with the companies’ employees.

This scenario took place in a very busy warehouse where workers are constantly moving around and there are people in multiple locations. This employee was unloading pallets of inventory onto shelves and was new to operating a forklift. As this employee maneuvered the forklift through the crowded warehouse, the employee noticed a stack of pallets dangerously positioned near an aisle where workers were walking. Recognizing the potential danger of a pallet tipping over and causing an injury, the employee immediately moved the pallets to a safer location. Thanks to this employee’s observation and quick action, a potential accident involving falling pallets was prevented. By diligently adhering to the principles of the safety program and promoting a culture of safety awareness among warehouse personnel, we have made significant strides towards achieving the Target Zero goal of no harm to people or the environment. Each team member plays a critical role in maintaining a safe working environment, and their commitment to safety is reflected in the prevention of accidents and injuries in the warehouse.

Our Aramark team received a call a spill on the floor as a coolant. Proper protocol was followed to clean the coolant spill. The area being cleaned got slicker and slicker. We found out that the area had Igepal CA-630 which is a nonionic detergent that was spilled and not coolant. The barrel was in the wrong area of the plant to begin with. I pulled the SDS for the product and found that the way we had cleaned was not the proper cleanup procedure. After a few hours of cleaning using vinegar, dawn, and water we were able to get the area cleaned properly.

I am a duty manager based in Portiuncula Hospital where we provide a patient food service. In total, we have about 50 staff on site. I am also the manager in charge of training and ensuring all mandatory training is up to date.

In Summer 2023 I decided to update how we recorded and kept track of our training records. Prior to this, it was a completely paper-based approach, using training cards.

I came up with the idea of using Excel to create a training matrix to keep track of which staff had completed each of the required training. Across the top of the page are all the different training needed to be completed by the staff on our site and down the left-hand side are the names of all our staff in alphabetical order. I used formulae to create a red, yellow, and green light system, such as when the training is in date the box will be green, when training is due within the month the box will be yellow and when training is overdue the box will turn red. This change happens automatically once the trainer inputs the next due date for that training. Also underneath I have formulated it so that all the staff out of date on each particular training are listed alphabetically. It is an automatically updating list of names.

This has improved our training greatly because the information is all in one place and easy to tell at a glance who is due training and whose training is out of date. Used in conjunction with the training cards this a super effective system for ensuring training is up to date, especially for any legally required food and health training.. It is also useful for audits because it gives an overview of our training at a glance. This matrix has resulted in a higher percentage of our staff being up to date on food and health & safety training, which has helped reduce the number of health and safety issues that can arise with untrained staff. This matrix ensures that we can be up to date on training staff and our staff are all trained and prepared for their roles. It helps our site run smoothly, effectively, and safely. This matrix can be easily adapted to suit any sized site.

I have attached a copy of a sample matrix to show how it works. The dates, names, and training titles can all be changed to suit the needs of different sites

For me, participating in Aramark’s campaign on safe food handling was an eye-opening experience. Through practical demonstrations and detailed training, we learned the importance of following strict procedures to ensure food safety. From proper glove and apron usage to correct storage temperatures, every detail mattered.

This initiative not only improved food handling safety but also fostered a more conscious and committed work environment. Employees began noticing and correcting potential errors before they could escalate into problems. Over time, accidents and injuries related to food handling significantly decreased, demonstrating that education and practice can make a difference in workplace safety12.

We have a monthly Health and Safety Representatives’ meeting in which we cover a Safety Moment; highlight hazards that have been logged with the site client Helpdesk; cover any action points from previous months; review the Safety Score Cards for the UK and Defence and the hours for individual components since the last lost work day; discuss recent incidents recorded on site and across the UK to learn from the incidents that occurred and how these could then be avoided by taking the appropriate action following Plan, Do, Check and Act. Information from the meeting is then cascaded down to the component teams by the Health and Safety Representatives to assist the teams in working more safely and avoiding any of the potential situations that resulted in the incidents.

SCENARIO – CHEMICAL SAFETY

Following an inspection from the HSA authority we received a non-conformance for chemical safety. Being in the pharmaceutical industry we use hazardous chemicals e.g. disinfectants and IPA supplied by the client for cleaning in the cleanroom areas

As a corrective action a new designated room was allocated for these chemicals

We received excellent training from Aramark compliance manager Colm McGrath on importance of

  • Risk assessment of the area
  • Correct storage of the chemicals , flammable cabinet and not stored beside other chemicals
  • Importance of ventilation
  • Storage of equipment
  • Correct ppe
  • Safety data sheet and chemical risk assessment
  • First aid
  • Chemical spillage
  • Preparation of the solution
  • Understanding label elements

Our UMass Lowell team has done an excellent job keeping up with ordering Shoes For Crews for all employees (new and current). We have been successful with this task for a number of reasons:

1) We have a strong safety culture at UMass Lowell. Our leaders take safety seriously, set expectations, and holds the team accountable.

2) Our District Safety Leader keeps up with weekly reminders for who is due for shoes and who will be due within the next week. This allows managers to plan ahead and order their employee shoes ASAP.

3) Consistent messaging and leading by example are also keys to success in safety programs like shoes for crews.

I hope this helps others to achieve their SFC goals too!

I am pleased to submit a few examples of the safety measures that have been successfully implemented over the past years to enhance safety within our site:

•Damaged floor surfaces -It’s essential to maintain a safe environment to prevent trip accidents, and repairing damaged floor surfaces is a crucial step in achieving this goal. By addressing this issue promptly, we mitigate the risk of potential injuries and promote a safer workspace for everyone.
•New delivery area ( double trouble door 🙂)-Installation of door hooks and safety bars in the new delivery area, particularly for the double trouble door, to prevent it from slamming and to mitigate the risk of potential injuries. Given the high traffic in the delivery area and the nature of the double trouble door, it’s essential to implement these safety measures to ensure the well-being of our employees and visitors. Door hooks helps hold the doors open securely when needed, while safety bars will provide additional support to prevent accidental slamming and potential body injuries.
•Be Safe and Seen- Providing high-visibility packs to staff on-site is a proactive measure to promote safety, especially in environments where visibility is crucial for accident prevention. These packs often include items like reflective vests, arm bands, or stickers to enhance visibility, particularly in low-light conditions. It’s a thoughtful initiative to prioritize the well-being of staff and ensure they’re easily identifiable for their safety.

Health and Safety is our top priority at Galway University Hospital. We are committed to providing a secure environment for our staff, patients, and visitors. Together, we uphold rigorous safety standards to promote well-being and prevent accidents.

Having had an endoscopy procedure, camera for the stomach they discovered bacteria of the gut which is linked to unwashed fruit and vegetables. Levels of pesticides

Pesticides are used to yield the crop of fruit and vegetables, they reduce damage from insects, weeds, and germs, however if consumed can lead to development of diseases such as cancer, diabetes.
It is extremely important to wash fruit and vegetables before consuming, even fruit that is peeled must be washed as the dirt and germs can be transferred from the outside.

The picture below shows what dirt and tiny insects came from a bunnet of strawberries. I eat a lot of fruit and often straight from the packet thinking I was being healthy and getting my 5 a day.

I have adapted this measure of washing all fruit and vegetables in my site before it is used, even the prepared vegetables all had evidence of either dirt or insects.

As the 2024 theme for WSHD IS climate control which includes use of agrochemicals including pesticides I thought this was an appropriate topic.

As a new General Manager of 24 schools, I noticed QA’s were being completed different by each manager, some had old flyers, regulations etc. I created for each Manager an accordion file with not only the logs, poster, QA tool, but with tape, alcohol wipes, sanitizer strip, thermometer and all necessary items for a complete review plus all can be done on site at time of audit. This has saved time, corrective actions done on site at time of visit and uniformity.

In a former company I worked for I worked as a Transporation Supervisor. My role was to keep our team of drivers safe. I was responsible for training and coaching safe driving. I coached them by numerous lessons in the classroom and from the passenger seat. Pre-trip inspections, Smith System training, Annual Safe Driving Evaluations, quarterly ride alongs, and etc. One of most rewarding roles that I have ever had. Outcome: All my employees went home safely every night with no major injuries or accidents.

A Dietitian came into the pantry kitchen and asked for a sandwich for a patient the catering assistant asked which patient is it for and the dietitian stated the name of the patient, and the catering assistant then told the dietitian that this patient is on a mince moist diet and therefore could not have what the dietitian requested.

To Double check the Catering Assistant went to check the overhead bed sign and it was tick minced moist so therefore the patient would not be allowed a sandwich for their meal. If the patient had received this item this could have been fatal / choking incident.

As a result of this we Introduced overhead bed sign audits. We have trained our staff if the overhead bed sign is not filled out, we are not allowed to give the meal to the patient this is to ensure that the correct meal is given to the patient.

On a cold winter day at Campamento Zona Norte, VP, while working under the relentless wind and rain, a concern invaded my thoughts: How could we protect our workers from potential accidents? It was then that a brilliant idea emerged in my mind.

I decided to take immediate action to ensure the safety and peace of mind for our team. I proposed installing non-slip mats on the floors, a simple yet effective measure to prevent slips and accidents. I wanted to make sure that each worker could perform their duties without worries, without fear of slipping or injuries.

The implementation of this solution not only provided us with a safer work environment but also conveyed a clear message: the safety and well-being of our team are of utmost importance. Since then, every shift has been carried out with the confidence and tranquility that our workers deserve.

Best regards, Patricia Varas Rivera HR Administrator

We started out Q1 2024 with 11 injuries at our Profit Center. I knew we needed to change the culture of the work environment. We have had a safety champion program for the past three years, but the number of injuries and the large number of new employees we experienced during Q1 told me we needed to take the program up a notch. I introduced the Safety Bucks program at out Monthly Safety Champion meeting. The team was so excited. The Safety Champions and members of the lead team are given a designated number of “Safety Bucks” to award to employees exhibiting safe behaviors, such as wearing cut gloves when using a knife. These bucks can be redeemed, saved, or used collectively for a wide range of items described in the Safety Bucks program hand out. We also celebrate no injury campuses at our monthly Safety Champion meetings. These certificates are given to the Safety Champions who display them near their safety boards at their respective locations.

These efforts have resulted in an overall reduction of workplace injuries. Q2 we reduced to 2 injuries, Q3 only 1 injury (thus far). Q4 we are reaching for Target Zero.

The team’s overall moral and awareness surrounding safety has increased.

On a cold winter day, the rains began to fall mercilessly on our project at Campamento Zona Norte. Soon, all the floors became a slippery challenge. We were perplexed, unsure how to address the problem due to the severity of the unsafe condition. It was then that an ingenious idea emerged: placing special floor-level stickers, affectionately nicknamed ‘porrazos’ (slip-preventers). This simple solution sparked a spirit of collaboration among the staff. Suddenly, keeping the floors dry became a game, and everyone actively participated in the effort. Slippery floors became a thing of the past, and teamwork triumphed over adversity.

Together with the SCH (Supply chain) area, risk control is developed through guardrails that are manually installed in the lateral areas of the truck platforms to prevent serious accidents due to people or food supplies falling. These railings are in the testing and product certification stage to later be manufactured in series.

BENEFITS

  • Eliminates the probability of personnel falling from >1.20 meters, thus generating safer operations in accordance with our Zero Harm Policy
  • Reduces the risk of overexertion due to its easy transportation
  • Positions Aramark in security matters with Clients.
  • Reduces the probability of food supplies losses due to load drop

The staff was asked to share safety related information to include actions or behaviors that changed over the past 10 years and submitted the following items. The team annually reviews the Aramark Safety Handbook and re-pledges our commitment to safety. Annual purchases of shoes for crew completed during the summer months, monthly OSHA trainings with tracking and make up sessions for those on vacation or on a leave of absence, implementation of a trash handling glove to add to our hand safety program, double-barrel caddies to handle both excessive and recycling waste, microfiber pad use eliminating heavier wet mops, high efficiency equipment such as auto-scrubber and space vacuums, daily stretching during pre-shift meetings and of course the safety program to include briefs, observations, safety committee meetings, hazard inspections forms, corrective actions and return to work opportunities.

All these actions during the past years has allowed the account to reduce it’s incident frequency from a high of 100 to a low of 4 injuries. Thank you for the opportunity to share.

From DNV, we highlight Aramark Spain’s commitment to a reference recognized by the hashtag #GFSI in the preparation of ready-made meals at their facilities in Zaragoza. This clearly demonstrates their commitment to providing a service of quality and in line with the highest food safety requirements included in the hashtag #FSSC22000 standard, which is not common in this sector. Congratulations, Aramark Spain. Aramark, a world leader in catering services, has obtained the FSSC 22000 “Food Safety System Certification”, an international food safety standard, at its Central Kitchen in Zaragoza. This achievement reflects the company’s commitment to excellence in food safety management and the quality of the food it offers to its customers.

Aramark’s Central Kitchen in Zaragoza is a state-of-the-art facility that is responsible for the production and distribution of food for a wide variety of customers throughout Spain. Located in the Empresarium industrial estate, Aramark’s Central Kitchen has an area of more than 1,400m2 and is designed to offer a high-quality and efficient service.

The kitchen has state-of-the-art technology and a team of highly trained professionals, who work closely together to guarantee the quality and food safety of the products they offer, which is why they have earned this recognition.

FSSC 22000 certification is granted by independent certification bodies such as DNV, accredited by the ISO/IEC 17065 standard, which assess a company’s compliance with the requirements established in the FSSC 22000 standard for food safety, accrediting the consistency of its processes at this level. This accreditation is internationally recognized and supported by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), which promotes the harmonization of food safety standards around the world.

The certification process has consisted of a full audit of all aspects of the food supply chain, including HACCP, good handling practices, product traceability, and raw material quality, among others.
“Obtaining the FSSC 22000 certification is the culmination of months of hard and dedicated work by a multidisciplinary team of professionals in Zaragoza, during which we have made progress in the continuous improvement of our internal processes,” explains Mª José Blasco, Director of Central Kitchens and R+D+I Processes at Aramark Spain.

“This recognition highlights our commitment to excellence in food safety management and to the quality of the products we offer to our customers,” adds Rosa Gel, Quality Director at Aramark Spain.

“From DNV we highlight ARAMARK’s commitment to a benchmark recognized by the GFSI global food safety initiative in the preparation of prepared meals at its facilities in Zaragoza, which shows the clear commitment on the part of the Organization to its stakeholders, in the provision of a quality service but also in accordance with the maximum food safety requirements included in the FSSC 22000 Standard. which is not usual in this type of sector,” says Ana del Rio, Country Manager of DNV Business Assurance in Iberia. https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6958725142868832256?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop https://www.linkedin.com/posts/dnv_aramark-consolida-su-liderazgo-en-seguridad-activity-7041066812888760320-zuxh?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

I do daily walk thru same areas all the time. One day I noticed that employee was using meat slicer standing on step stool. I walk daily that way never noticed that. I questioned the employee why she is using step stool, she said due to her height it is hard to hold slicer and her arm hurts. I changed the table of the slicer to correct height so that employee don’t have to use step stool. Employee was very happy with the changes, she said has been using step stool for more than 3 years, not feeling safe but was doing thinking this was only option to perform the duty. By changing table not only made employee happy, but it also prevented injuries from happening.
For me the lesson I learned from this scenario that when you are walking the operation, make sure to pay attention do your diligent, hence importance of Marco app when it comes to Safety.

Our account has added a detailed allergen process from start to finish. It starts with the guest informing a FLA about their allergen. The associate gets a lead or supervisor to speak to the guest. The lead or supervisor logs the allergen by asking what the allergy is, and then refers to our binder, that has all the menu options and the list of the allergens by item, to check ingredients of our items and then offering the guest a safe item. The same person talking to the guest is the same person preparing the food from start to finish.

Safety is a major part of my day. Being the Safety Champion of my building, I take pride in knowing that I make a difference. Right after I clock in, I make my rounds. I greet each and every employee while simultaneously checking for SFC and proper PPE. I correct employees in a fun way. I may say. “Look at yourself and tell me what’s missing?” We smile and they immediately correct the issue. I also look from a guest’s perspective. I make sure there are no trip hazards, water puddles, etc. I then go to dry storage and make sure that there are no boxes sticking. out causing “struck by” incidents. I look for ways to declutter every day. Having OCD helps me in this aspect. I make safety a part of my life. I also take what I learn at work and apply it to my everyday life.

A couple of years ago a customer approached us to explain that he and another customer had a severe peanut allergy. They explained that they feared for their safety when food was on the menu with peanuts as an ingredient. We decided to make the restaurant and hopefully, the whole building peanut-free.
We now do not buy peanut products or make dishes with peanuts as an ingredient. We also stopped selling any confectionary with peanuts as an ingredient. When buying new products, we always check with suppliers if they contain peanuts.
We make our own nut butter from almonds and use this in smoothies and satay sauce.

We also asked the vending company to cease selling confectionary with peanuts in the vending machines.

We sent out a communication to the whole building explaining the changes and why and asked them to not bring in any products from home with peanuts.

The two colleagues were very happy with our actions and they feel we made their workplace a safer place for them.

Scenario – Joined team Dec 19th. Getting to know the district, client, health department and concerns of the district to better understand the safety culture that exists.

Have been really working on relationships with local health departments and understanding their concern of the district. Worked with Aramark Safety Leadership to understand their understanding of the past concerns. Educated myself on all of the good, bad and what could be possible for this account and then I dug in. Fixing the health department focuses, working on safety briefs, safe observations with the team and then taught the leadership the GMM portal. They now are doing monthly QAs which were not being completed. Shifting the focus to safely operating has been my goal and challenge to the team. It really helped to understand the history of the account and where we were performing or not performing. Low hanging fruit approach to fixing the small things that really matter and then digging into deeper cultural issues.

I also worked with my HR manager to understand the GMM portal and what it told us. We looked to see why we had open claims from years ago and worked closely on the portal to close anything that was open. Explaining the responsibility of getting people back to work as soon as possible. I feel good about the team’s knowledge of safety requirements and the mission to align with no one gets hurt moto. Our people are the most important focus to keep improving our services we offer in the safest manner possible.

On a busy delivery morning. Maintaining a small 23’X12′ dock; receiving 12 pallets, a lot can go wrong!
The am team here at Yavapai arrives at 4;30am to prepare the dock for the vendors safety as well as their own. The dock is swept, mopped, and marked for receiving product. The electric pallet jack is charged and placed in a safe location awaiting its trained user. Regardless of weather or timing, we work together to get the job done. Communication and safety are the key. Without either, all the pallets could not be received, product gets damaged, and increased safety concerns. As we commemorate World Health and Safety Day 2024, our team at the Indian River Commissary has an awe-inspiring tale to tell, perfectly embodying this year’s theme: “Shine on for Safety.” From the very first day we opened our doors, we’ve achieved something truly extraordinary: maintaining Target Zero for an impressive 11 consecutive years and 9 months. This remarkable feat speaks volumes about Tanya Whatley’s and Team Indian Rivers unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety of our workplace.

Now, let’s turn our attention to hurricanes. When those storm warnings start swirling, the IRC Team springs into action. Picture this: our team hustling to gather hurricane supplies and fortify the unit like a fortress against the impending storm. It’s a heart-pounding moment, ensuring we’re fully prepared to weather the storm without a hitch.

But the real heroics unfold during the storm itself. The entire Trinidad District is on high alert, with our district team coming together and providing constant updates on the storm’s location, track, and intensity. We’re glued to the weather reports, ready to tackle any danger that comes our way. We don’t just sit idly by; we take proactive measures, securing loose items, reinforcing our defenses, and keeping everyone informed every step of the way.

And here’s the truly remarkable part: rain or shine, storm or calm, Tanya and Team IRC never faltered in our commissary delivery schedule for the inmate population. When the storm warnings hit, our team ensures that the inmates receive their commissary bags ahead of time, ensuring their needs are met even in the face of adversity. It’s a seamless process, guaranteeing that those who rely on us never go without.

But our dedication to safety extends even further. In the face of hurricanes, Tanya and her team of dedicated professionals’ shelters in place at the unit to address any concerns with customers, client families, or teammates. They are there, sometimes up to 48 hours, providing assistance and hard work to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved.

Through it all, our dedication to safety shines brighter than ever. It’s about more than just surviving the storm; it’s about ensuring that every member of our team fully embraces the culture of safety. We don’t just set the bar; we are the bar!

As we celebrate World Health and Safety Day, let’s raise a toast to our fearless team at the Indian River Commissary and our unwavering commitment to safety. Here’s to many more years of bold adventures and safe journeys ahead Tanya!

Our group went through transitioning from mail delivery to digital mail sending. A change from physical delivery to being behind a desk, sorting, process and in the end scanning the document to be sent to recipients. A major effect, amongst many, is the repetitive motion with the use of a mouse – to process, QA and send via email. Before our staff develop any sort of pain or inconvenience from being seated down and working with a computer and a mouse, we proposed the use of an ergonomic mouse and / or mouse key pad. We got approval and happy to say that up to this point in time (fingers crossed) we haven’t had any negative feedback from our staff with regard any pain or convenience that might have cause by a more sedentary stance from work.

My team member was cooling salmon down and wasn’t 100% sure that she was following the correct temperature to avoid the danger zone. We have signage on our walls, but instead of guessing and doing it incorrectly, she came and asked if I could confirm the correct temperature. The language on the signage was confusing and she didn’t want to do it wrong. Moving forward I will be posting signage in Spanish as well, and I applaud her for stepping up and asking questions.

Safety practice examples

1. In each of the five staff dormitories, there is a fire for cooking in the dormitory, which is very unsafe. Considering the daily living needs of employees, the dormitories were reorganized and one room was converted into a shared kitchen: the wiring was rewired, wall tiles were installed, axial flow fans were installed, and furniture was provided for employees to cook.

2. Due to limited sockets in the employee dormitories, employees randomly connect power strips and tie the power cords to the bed rails. The power plugs of the power strips are still on the beds. Once the insulation of the power strips is damaged, it will cause leakage and fire. Wait for huge hidden dangers. The Joint Engineering Department renovated dormitory wiring and installed sockets to make it easier for employees to use.

With the move to the new building I have noticed and witnessed many near misses from a metal door that lead from the parking lot to the loading (where my team is currently located). I also noticed a corner of the loading dock having a blind spot. I immediately reached out to building management and explained the two health and safety hazards. I was redirected to their security team who manages the health and safety program. After speaking to the security manager he agreed and in less than 3 weeks a glass insert was placed on the door allowing both incoming and outgoing views along with a concave mirror. I was very pleased how quickly they resolved the matter. I also learned these measures will be implemented on the second tower as well.
