Season/Aramark at the home of Guinness
We are sharing our story with our Aramark wider team showing how we are identifying and prevent accidents/incidents from happening and continually driving our safety culture at the Guinness storehouse.
Scenario:
We identified a major risk in our bars when a staff member was required to lift a full glass rack from the bottom shelf of a glass rack trolley. The rack held 30 pint glasses, that could cause a potential injury when lifting from the lower shelf.
Over the duration of a normal day, glasses accumulate from each bar and restaurant within the areas. If a member of the team were to lift one of these full racks from the lower area of the trolly, the action could place a great strain upon their back causing an incident. Lifting a full rack from the bottom shelf, not following manual handling procedures can compromise one’s posture making it more of a challenge to gain and keep stability for the entirety of the task being carried out.
We evaluated our safety briefs and risk assessments, we were able to identify and gain new insight and knowledge that gave us a sense of direction in how to proceed to make it a safer working environment along with the ability to learn from past mistakes. Seasons collaborated with MFK and Diageo to implement preventable measures:
Corrective action, we purchased half rack glasses for the bottom shelf that can now only house 15 glasses placed within the lower rack, also we welded closed the midpoint of the bottom shelf so only half racks can be stored, prohibiting the use of full glass racks on the bottom shelf. This enabled us to prevent an accidents from happening and abide by our manual handling guidelines and prevent unnecessary risks. This prevents anyone from carrying a load that could potentially cause great harm, in turn having serious consequences.
